Salma* and her family live in a tent in an overcrowded shelter for displaced people in Gaza after their home was destroyed in the recent escalation of violence. She has three younger brothers and a little sister. When they quickly fled their home to seek safety, they were barely able to take anything, except for birth certificates, some money, and a few pieces of clothing.
Life in the shelter is far from ideal. Every day, Salma and her four siblings wait in long lines to use the bathroom, and the drinking water makes them sick.
Salma and her brother Hisham* are both A+ students and have aspirations to become medical professionals. “I want to be a dentist when I grow up. I will also leave Gaza and never come back. I am tired of continuous conflict and displacement to multiple homes and shelters,” says 16-year-old Salma.
