Toronto, July 9, 2024 – It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of John Hillman, a true hero and inspiration to all Canadians. At the remarkable age of 105, Mr. Hillman captured hearts across Canada with his incredible determination and unwavering commitment to helping children in crisis.
To date John Hillman, a centenarian, WWII Veteran, and cherished former resident of Carlton House of Oak Bay raised nearly half a million dollars for Save the Children by walking laps around his retirement residence courtyard in Victoria, BC.
“John Hillman’s passion and resilience were unparalleled,” said Danny Glenwright, President and CEO of Save the Children. “He demonstrated a boundless spirit and compassion for others and embodied the very essence of our organization’s values.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Hillman’s family,” added Danny “His legacy will forever be remembered and cherished within the Save the Children community and beyond.”
In the spring of 2020, John was inspired by his comrade Captain Tom Moore, who walked at his own residence in the UK to raise funds for the National Health Service. Captain Tom Moore and John Hillman both fought in World War II, and each have a Burma Star.
John’s fundraiser in 2020 was a fantastic success, raising more than $169,000 for Save the Children’s Covid Relief fund to support children and families affected by the pandemic in Canada and around the world. John felt compelled to assist children affected by conflict and other emergencies. In the span of four years, John raised more than $440,000 for children in crisis.
This year, John stepped back from his annual fundraising walk. It was his wish that we keep his online fundraising page open, so that people can continue to contribute to his fund.
END.
