Why Save the Children
Save the Children is the world’s first and leading independent children’s organization.
Simply put: we believe in the possibility of a world where every child grows up healthy, safe and educated.
Want to know more about why you should get involved? Here are five reasons why Save the Children makes a real difference.
#1 – We have over 100 years of experience.
When we say we were the world’s first independent children’s organization, we mean it. All the way back in 1919, our founder, Eglantyne Jebb, saw how children were impacted by the aftermath of WWI and launched Save the Children to raise funds to support them.
Over a century later, we remain committed to Jebb’s core belief that all children have rights, and we continue with the same drive – to help as many children in crisis as possible.
#2 – We work in the hardest-to-reach places, where it’s toughest to be a child.
Today, 468 million children live in conflict-affected areas around the world. Another 43.3 million have been displaced from their homes. Natural disasters – and their resulting impacts, including displacement – are not only more frequent but more severe. Children in crisis are always the most at risk and right now there are more children that need our support than ever before.
#3 – We aren’t just child focused; we’re child led.
Save the Children isn’t just an outspoken champion for children, we also work with them – as well as their families and their communities – to ensure that their voices are being uplifted, their needs are met, and their rights are respected.
At Save the Children, we are guided by seven key values – accountability, courage, diversity, human rights, inclusion, justice, and reciprocity. We ensure that children’s thoughts, opinions and experiences remain at the heart of everything we do.
#4 – We’re committed to you through transparency and financial accountability.
More than 80% of donations to Save the Children goes towards developing and delivering programs for children and families in Canada and around the world.
We are committed to using our resources efficiently, achieving results, and being accountable to supporters, partners and most of all, children. To learn more about our accountability to our supporters, check out our most recent annual report here.
#5 – We are bold and ambitious
Save the Children focuses our work on four key areas that we feel will have the biggest impact for children, and which matter most to our supporters:
- Children in Crisis;
- Indigenous Child Rights;
- Gender Equality; and
- Climate Justice.
Our goal is to inspire one million Canadians to act and support our work, to create meaningful change and ensure children’s voices are heard in Canada and around the world.
Our ambition builds on 100 years’ experience of bringing communities, civil society, governments, businesses and donors together to achieve lasting change for children. Because we believe this is the only way that we can inspire real progress and breakthroughs in the way the world treats children.
