October / November Monthly newsletter

Dear Supporter,

Right now, up to 14 million people in Yemen are facing starvation. A man-made famine is a very real possibility, the worst in a hundred years. In just the past weeks, thousands of children in Yemen have died from extreme hunger and hundreds more are suspected to have contracted cholera.

And, there is yet another layer of threat in Yemen: a failing economy and collapsing currency.

As a result, parents cannot afford the basics for their children as massive inflation is increasing the cost of essential commodities such as food, water, electricity, fuel and medicines.

Parents are skipping meals or even starving themselves just to feed their children.

Public sector salaries haven’t been paid in months, in some cases, years. Civil servants make up almost a third of the workforce, so parents simply can’t afford to feed their families any longer.

Our Save the Children teams on the ground are reporting the horrors of this war. The economic collapse is Yemen’s silent killer; many Yemenis are struggling just to survive. The economic situation is getting worse, money is worth less and people aren’t getting paid.

This additional economic layer comes as fighting escalates in the key port city of Hodeidah. There continues to be heavy fighting in the city, sometimes, with airstrikes every few minutes. Early in November, the Saudi and Emirati-led Coalition escalated their military offensive. Soldiers allied to the Government of Yemen are now waging a battle within the Hodeidah City area. The lives of hundreds of thousands of people, roughly half of them children, are in danger.

Save the Children is calling on Canada and governments around the world to protect children in conflict and work towards a peace agreement in Yemen. The international community should also be working to stabilize the economy in the Gulf country. The warring parties must also allow complete and unconditional access for humanitarian and commercial goods into Yemen to help bring down the cost of living and save lives urgently.

Celebrating Children Everywhere

Today is a special day. It’s Universal Children’s Day, a day to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

Every day we are inundated with stories of suffering. You might feel powerless and the bigger picture can feel hopeless. But when you take a closer look at the smaller picture, you can see big changes happening in the world.

This Universal Children’s Day, join us on social media and take a look at #TheSmallerPicture as we share stories of children who inspire us.
