Tropical Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province Thursday evening, recording maximum sustained winds of 200 kph, the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane.
We’re assessing the options to respond to this new disaster, which will very likely get worse as flash floods, landslides and storm surges expected in the coming days. Access to the area is a challenge as flights have been cancelled and roads will have been washed away.
NGOs and local communities are working around the clock to respond to the massive destruction caused by Cyclone Idai over a month ago, and now with Cyclone Kenneth, the biggest ever recorded cyclone in the southern hemisphere making landfall, resources will be stretched even further. The time is now for the international community to dig deep and support the children and their families in Mozambique and its neighbours to get back on their feet.
