Guatemalans have endured several civil wars in the last 50 years. The country is also hard hit with malnutrition and has one of the highest rates of infant and maternal mortality in the hemisphere. As in most countries in the region, elementary school enrollment rate is high but the quality of education and the number of children who graduate from high school are very low. Violence against women and children is also systemic and widespread.
What We Do
In Guatemala, Save the Children works to ensure children enjoy quality education; that they are protected and can express their opinion; and to decrease malnutrition rates among young children.
Master’s program on child rights
Save the Children Canada supports a network of eight universities in the region in the realization of a Master’s Program in Children’s Rights. Twenty students have graduated from this program to date from the Rafael Landivar University of Guatemala and they now are in positions that benefit children of their country. Children throughout the continent are benefiting from improved local and national policies and higher quality programs that respond to their needs and the needs of their families.
