Mali

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking as one of the most underdeveloped nations. A majority of the population lacks access to basic services such as primary health care and education, and HIV and AIDS infection rates continue to rise.

What We Do

With the support of Global Affairs Canada and in partnership with consortium partners Aga Khan Foundation, World Vision, and Plan International, Save the Children operates a project called Projet d’Amélioration de l’Accès aux Services d’Éducation de Qualité (PASEQ). While Save the Children’s work is focused mainly in the regions of Sikasso and Yorosso in the south of the country, the project also reaches the regions of Kayes, Koulikoro, Ségou, and Mopti through the other consortium partners.

This project guarantees children access to quality educational infrastructure in pre-schools and elementary schools across the region by improving nutritional, health and hygienic conditions; promoting gender equality; and advocating for sustainable school management with greater involvement of parents, communities, and community leaders. So far, 70 preschools and 15 elementary schools in 83 villages have benefited from the project.

By March 2017, we aim to:

  • Provide 4,250 girls and 3,871 boys in 70 preschools and 15 elementary schools with clean water and handwashing stations
  • Build latrines in 70 preschools which are sensitive to the different needs of girls and boys, as well as to the needs of children living with a handicap
  • Train 210 mothers in gender-sensitive pedagogy combatting school violence, with 90 receiving additional training on psychosocial support and child protection
  • Empower women to influence decisions in school management committees
  • Build canteens responsive to the needs of children living with a handicap in 70 schools and preschools, providing nutritious meals to 4,519 preschool 4,101 elementary school students
  • Provide training on preschool nutrition to 210 mothers.
  • Deliver anti-parasite treatment to 8,620 children

To achieve our goals, we work in partnership with Early Childhood development centres, schools, parents, community leaders, national and regional government, and civil organizations.
