Indian Ocean Tsunami
Nearly Five years later, Save the Children Continues to assist Children, Families Affected by Tsunami
(October, 2009) On December 26th, 2004, a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck Asia and Africa causing major infrastructural damage while killing and displacing hundreds of thousands. Save the Children was quick to provide critical emergency aid to people of the region. Nearly five years later Save the Children is still providing critical assistance to those in need. In what has become the biggest emergency response in its history, Save the Children has assisted up to 1 million people — a majority of whom are children — who survived the earthquake and tsunami.
Save the Children continues to assist hundreds of thousands of children living in areas affected by this disaster. We have now moved on from relief operations to longer-term support and assistance in critical areas such as child protection, education, health and livelihoods as part of our five-year response and recovery programme.

Children for Children: Reflections on the Tsunami
Canadians responded to the Tsunami disaster in many ways, from donating funds to expressing their sympathy through music and art. The following is a collection of artwork from students across Canada (the artwork was selected by a youth panel, and demonstrates the depth of empathy felt after this disaster) See the entire art collection here: Tsunami Reflections (2005)
